Stuff White People Like – December 29,2010

I have stopped everything I am doing at work to post this. I feel I need to because I just had a pretty funny experience.

A co-worker just stopped by my desk and handed me a page from her “Stuff White People Like” 1 thing a day rip off calendar. She gave me the slip of paper dated 12/29/10 and told me that I was the first person she thought about when she read it.

Gigantic Salads

If you live in an area with a lot of people, there are few more profitable restaurant ideas than one that serves enormous salads. Many times the local sandwich shop will also offer up these giant salads, which should just serve as further proof about the feasibility of the business model.The way to create one of these salads is to accumulate as many types of lettuce as you can, then put some sort of meat on there (sliced steak, chicken, turkey), and charge $10 for it.

As you can tell they have figured out my eating patterns during lunch…I will say that in my defense I make my salads myself.  1 bag of lettuce = 2.00, 1 can of tuna = 99 cents…my salad is much cheaper 🙂 haha

Fireside Chats with Turbeau – Ask me anything! DO IT!

I have seen a lot of people open up their blogs for people to ask them questions about anything and everything.  Since my blog post ideas are few and far between these days I wanted to follow the trend and see if you all had any questions for me.  You can ask me anything…anything at all.  Just post the questions (remember little children could be reading this so please refrain from the obsene and keep it at least PG-13) the questions to the comments section of this post or if you want a little more privacy email them to me at  PLEASE NO SPAM or else I will hunt you down and make your life very very unpleasant.

Update:  My Mug!

Lots of good family action going on today.  My youngest nephew is running around the house in a full on Jets football uniform, with a real looking helmet and everything, my oldest nephew now has a spy kit which includes a remote control car that is driven through a monitor on his glasses so he can be in another room while driving it somewhere else, pretty neat!

My parents even got me a homemade coffee mug from a local potter that has the artwork of the swim bike and run figures.  Very cool, unique and very large!!

Pictures to come later but for now its time to eat some good food, rest and read, then maybe go out for a little recovery run tonight.

Turbeau’s Tip of the Day

If your going to do something do it right and don’t cut corners, put your full effort into it and give it your maximum concentration…no excuses, and don’t boast about it….just do your job and if its good enough other people will do the talking.

I strive to live by these words, you should too.  Even if you come up short once in a while keep fighting for perfection because even if you do miss you’ll still be in pretty good shape.

It’s December 23rd everyone, and you know what that means!  Its time for Festivus, the nondenominational holiday that involves a metal pole.  So prepare to air your grievances and perform your feats of strength.

As celebrators of Festivus can tell you, Festivus only comes to an end when the head of the family is wrestled to the floor.  So have a great day, let those around your know that they are annoying you, do as many push ups as you can, and don’t let the fun stop until someone hits the floor!

Turbeau’s Triathlon Essentials

Here is a list of what I use on pretty much a daily basis.  This will be a kind of running list but at least here is a start and maybe it will help you in your decision making.  Let me know what other things you are interested in or thinking about buying and maybe I can shed some light and lead you in the right direction!

Garmin 310xt

Wetsuit – wide range of varieties and price ranges.  My suggestion is that if you are new to the sport and just “getting your feet wet” pick up a cheaper model and see how things go.  If you get sucked into this sport than by all means go balls out and get the latest and greatest :)..just learn from me..I tend to go big right off the bat and many times I end up spending way more than I should have or needed to.  But if money is no option the Blue Seventy Helix is always a pretty nice buy.

Timex Ironman Sleek 150-Lap TapScreen WatchThis watch is a jack of all trades, I use it for timing my laps in the pool, using it on my runs when I don’t want to wear my HR monitor or even on those runs when I want to use the 4 garmin screens for other data read outs, and on the bike during my long rides and races.  During the long rides and races I use my watch to keep track of my race total time and more importantly I monitor when I should be eating and drinking.  This watch is a great tool and has many uses for a triathlete.  It even comes in handy when lifting weights and making sure you take enough rest in between sets!

Running Shoes – Trainers.  I am currently running in Brooks Adrenaline 11’s. These were recommended to me by a very fast friend of mine named PW, check his blog out!  This dude is lightning fast SO I go by his advice.  I have been running regularly for about a year and a half now and I have struggled to find a reliable shoe that feels good day in and day out.  I though the Newtons were going to be the ones that I would stick with but I became injured last Spring, now I am not blaming the Newtons at all for this but since then I have been hesitant to get back to running in them mainly because of all the injuries that I have seen and heard about from people who were running in Newtons.  The mind can play some nasty games on you and for me I have not wanted to risk getting hurt in them at the moment.  Thus, I have tried many many shoes from Saucony Kinavara’s, to KSwiss Blades, to versions of asics…but Brooks has been the one brand that has hit a certain cord with me.  I ran the Syracuse 70.3 in the ST-4 racer and I ran IMFL in them as well.  Brooks is coming out with the ST-5 in a few months and I am pretty psyched to pick up a pair as the new colors are Blue and Orange..which if you know me well were my high school colors 🙂

I usually will buy my shoes at Fleet Feet in Rochester if they have what I want since its very convenient and I don’t have to wait for shipping.  However once I know what I like I will usually stick to as they have really good deals.

Bike – A tri bike is a great tool for triathlon.  However it is not essential and you are more than prepared if you have a road bike.  I am just a straight up goober and have to more bikes than know what to do with.  And if you ask me what kind of bikes to buy I am going to tell you TREK TREK TREK..Speed Concept for triathlon and a Madone for road riding.  And I know some great people at Towpath Bike in Pittsford, NY that will hook you up!  Just tell them that Turbeau sent you!!  GET THE TURBEAU DISCOUNT!

Bike Shoes – Bike shoes are another area where I have toyed around with A LOT.  Just ask people who ride with me.  I seem to have a different pair of bike shoes everyday.  Its just the nature of Turbeau, I have always been fussy about my sneakers whether they be baseball cleats, football cleats, basketball sneakers, Jordans for walking around in, dress shoes for just doesn’t matter I am very fussy about how they look and how they fit.  What does all that mean?  Well it means that in my 1.5 years of cycling I’ve probably had 6 different pairs of bike shoes.  I’ve tried Bontrager Hilo’s, Bonts, DMT’s, etc.. I though the DMT’s were going to be the IT fact I still have a good pair that I use but the ones that I have really settled on are the Specialized Road Shoes..even though they are supposed to be for road riding they are great for 1/2 Ironman and Full Ironman races and I will even use them for Sprints because I like them.  And if you don’t believe me just look at any of the pictures from Ironman races.  Jordan Rapp wears them…MACCA (World Champ) wears them..the proof as they say is in the pudding.

Endurox – a great post workout recovery drink if you can find it at a good price.  I usually get it on  However if you are looking for comparable replacement that you can get at the grocery store just pick up some skim milk and hersheys syrup and there ya go a great post workout recovery drink!

And the word of the week is “Blah”

Is it just me or is this week really mundane.  It just seems like it won’t get on with it.  Maybe its just me but I can’t get my but in gear.  For instance today I thought I was on track to have a bright and cheerful day with lots of energy packed in it.  Everything was going great all the way up until my ride into work from the pool this morning.  BAM!  My left eye won’t stay open, my contact felt like it was on fire and there was a strange sensation that someone was poking a needle into my eyeball.  I managed to drive through the traffic one-eyed and make it into work.  Once their I had to figure out if I could get myself ready to give a presentation to the staff that I was scheduled for.  Luckily I have a nice manager and she told me that I looked like I needed to quit taking drugs before I come into work.  Anyways, the only real option I had was to get the contacts out and make my way back to my apartment to go get my glasses, and thats what I did.  I ran home and got my glasses and proceeded on with the day.  Even when I was just wearing the glasses my eye still really hurt bad..its not pink eye..I really don’t know what it is.  I am thinking maybe I scratched it or really just irritated the heck out of it because even with glasses on and no contacts in my left eye has been blurry all day.  Hopefully a good nights sleep will lend to some healing action going on.

Anyway, nothing else to exciting happened today.  I went to the gym tonight and lifted some weights but I don’t know I guess I just wasn’t as into it tonight as usual.  Guess that means I need some extra sleep time!  On that note I am going to finish my delicious and nutritious broccoli and hit the sack.

Good Morning and Happy Hump Day

The middle of the week is here.  It is all down hill after lunch today.  I only have a few short minutes as I am heading to the pool this morning.  Yet again old man winter kind of came up short.  It looks like the snow storm that we were supposed to keep getting didn’t really hit all that hard.  Still a decent amount of snow, but just not the snowed in feeling…at least in my opinion.

This morning I have actually read slides that I am presenting at my office today.  I am presenting on the wildly exciting topic of HSA plans, should be a good one!  If you are dying to know more about your Health Savings Account Options and Form 8889 just let me know and I’d be more than happy to tell you.  Right…..


Alright then, off to the pool then to work.  Maybe I’ll have some time later today to spruce this blog up as its pretty lame at the moment.

Foiled Once Again

Old Mother Nature and Jack Frost came up short once again. I went to bed nice and early in my warm and cozy bed with dreams of Rochester being shut down due to arctic conditions. Alas, the snow did not fall in the quantity expected and the roads are reasonable navigable.

It was a struggle for me to get out of bed this morning due to this knowledge that was provided to me with one quick glance out the window. I even spent an extra 1.5 hours in bed this morning. Weird, because I went to bed at 8pm. I guess I just needed the sleep. Over the last year I have learned that 95% of the time its better to stay in bed if your tired and you have the extra time (i.e. your not running late for work). So I slept until 6 and then road my bike for about an hour this morning. I have a short run and some lifting left on the schedule today but I am feeling pretty confident that I will be able to get this done tonight. I just have to take care of a few big projects at work first.

Any comments giving me encouragement to not fall asleep or get tired at work are very welcome. It’s so darn hard to come home from work when its pitch black out and go back out for another workout.

This little worker bee is headed to the office once again. Another day of working towards hopefully another turn in the road.
